DIY Smartwatch Based on ESP8266

Once one gets rid of the shackles that the restriction to through-hole components puts on the electronics hobbyist, an entire new world of possibilites opens up. I really wanted to get started building own devices using SMD components so I recently purchased a hot-air soldering station and a reflow oven. One of my first self-designed projects was this ESP8266-based WiFi smartwatch:
